2020/21 Season Start Up - Important Information
Submitted By Shannon Todd on Saturday, October 3, 2020
Welcome back Comets! We are excited to start this hockey season. Like all other Centres the hockey season will look different this year. The board has been working with the Municipality and OMHA to ensure we are bringing our hockey players back on the ice safely. We are continuing to review new Municipality requirements with regards to the personal liability waiver being requested of each family to sign and their ice contract. We are aiming to be on the ice on October 13.We’ve had to become creative with our teams this year with the intent of development and providing game play (3 on 3 or 4 on 4) for our hockey players. At this stage there are no rep teams, if rep teams/tryouts are allowed in the future by OHF and OMHA we will reassess.

Our WLMHA divisions:

U7 - IP Program - will have the ice on Tuesday and Saturday.

U8 & U9 (Minor & Major Novice) – this group will practice together on Tuesdays. Saturday will be in-house game day. The Novice and Atoms will be combined to create 3 teams. One team will play back to back on Saturdays which will rotate between the 3 teams.

U11 (Atom) will practice on Thursdays. Saturday will be in-house game day. The Novice and Atoms will be combined to create 3 teams. One team will play back to back on Saturdays which will rotate between the 3 teams.

U15 (Peewee/Bantam) will practice on Tuesdays. Please check the website to see whether you are on Bantam A or Bantam B for practices. Saturday will be in-house game day. There will be 3 teams. One team will play back to back on Saturdays which will rotate between the 3 teams.

U18 (Midget) will practice on Thursdays. Please check the website to see whether you are on Midget A or Midget B for practices. Sunday will be in-house game day. There will be 3 teams. One team will play back to back on Sundays which will rotate between the 3 teams.

The first two weeks of hockey will be practices only. Once the teams are established for game play, they will be posted on the website.

Ice times will be posted in the coming days.

You will need to have completed the following before your player can go on the ice;

  • COVID Screening Questionnaire – needs to be completed each time entering the arena.
  • Mandatory parent meeting to review the return to play protocols. More information will be posted.

What to expect when coming to the arena:

  • Only 1 Parent/Guardian will be allowed into the arena with their player if their player is a minor. No exceptions.
  • Players must come to the arena fully dressed with the exception of their skates and helmet; wearing masks. Social distancing markers need to be adhered to.
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to your ice time to complete the COVID screening questionnaire. There will be a volunteer conducting the screening in the pay window.
  • If a Player or Parent/Guardian fail the screening they will be asked to leave the arena immediately.
  • Once passed screening you will be asked to use the chairs to tie skates which will be lined up behind the benches. Both player and parent must stay at this location until the player is allowed on the ice by the arena staff.
  • At the time the Player puts their helmet on, they can then remove their masks.
  • Once the player goes on the ice, all parents are to go to the bleachers and social distance if they are staying. The warm room will not be open for viewing. If the parent is not staying, they will not be allowed into the arena again.
  • When the player’s ice time is over, they must proceed back to their same chair to remove their skates and helmet and immediately put their mask on; Parents are to go back to the chairs with their player.
  • Parents and players are required to exit immediately and within 10 minutes of coming off the ice. Please turn your players chair around to face the wall to signal that it needs to be cleaned.
  • Parents and player are to exit out of the same doors.
  • No outside food or drink will be allowed in the arena with the exception of the players water bottle. There will be no team water bottles.

Players over 15 years old may use the dressing room; this is for players who are driving themselves to the arena. There cannot be more than 7 people in a dressing room. The showers and washrooms must not be used.

Only the washrooms in the warm room will be available. The sitting/standing area in the warm room and the canteen will be closed.

The arena will be locked at the start of the ice time and will not re-open until 15 minutes prior to the next team’s ice time.

Volunteer Hours – This year we will not have the traditional volunteer jobs we have offered in the past. We really need all of our hockey families to help at the arena with the COVID screening. Volunteer hours will be assigned to hockey families to conduct the COVID screening during your player’s ice time. Once 8 volunteer hours per child (max of 16 hours) has been completed you will receive your volunteer cheque. If you are unable to attend your assigned time, it will be your responsibility to find someone to replace you so your player’s team can be screened into the arena. It takes a village and we need all hands-on deck this year!
