Coach & Bench Staff Requirements

WLMHA is committed to ensuring the selection of quality coaches, with an emphasis on learning hockey, improving hockey skills, and promoting a positive experience in sport for kids. Above and beyond coaching methods, there are Hockey Canada requirements for bench staff.

All Bench Staff (Coaches, Trainers, Team Managers) are required to complete the following:

Vulnerable Sector Screening *NEW in 2024*
All individuals volunteering, including coaches, trainers and parents volunteering to help on-ice, must have a completed Vulnerable Sector Screening.  Vulnerable Sector Screenings (Volunteers) can be completed online or in person at the Elgin County OPP Detachment.  

Steps to Complete the Vulnerable Sector Check:

  1. Download the WLMH Volunteer Letter and include your name. Vulnerable Sector Screenings are free with this letter.
  2. Either apply online with the OPP here, or visit the Elgin County detachment in St. Thomas in person. If you live outside of Elgin County you will need to consult your local police detachment.
  3. Completed the process as required by the Ontario Hockey Federation to have your Vulnerable Sector Check reviewed and approved. 

No adults will be permitted on the ice without a valid Vulnerable Sector Check reviewed by the Ontario Hockey Federation. 

Ontario Hockey Federation - Vulnerable Sector Check Process
It is imperative for all Team Officials to ensure their Vulnerable Sector Check is complete to be eligible for programs on and off the ice.  This includes a valid Vulnerable Sector Check and the OHF Screening Declaration Form, as required to be submitted in the OHF Screening Submission Portal

Before entering the OHF Screening Submission Portal, please ensure you are ready with the necessary documentation. You will need your:

  1. All documents must be in PDF format to be accepted. 
  2. For the 2024-2025 season, the OHF will be accepting copies of a Vulnerable Sector Check from from 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 AND OHF Screening Declaration Form (PDF).

Respect In Sport Activity Leaders:

All coaches & on-ice help (including parents volunteering to help on-ice) are required to also complete their Respect in Sport (Activity Leader) course as well.  This is required even if you have completed the Respect in Sport - Parent course.  

Gender Expression & Identity Course:
This course must be completed online by all bench staff.  Register and complete this course within the Hockey Canada database.  This will be added to your Hockey Canada profile.


Rowan's Law Resources & Acknowledgement
All bench staff are required to complete the Rowan's Law Acknowledgement from the Ontario Hockey Federation.  Bench staff are required to be aware of Concussion Awareness Resources and Return to Play, as well as bench staff and player responsibilities.


OMHA Coaches & Trainer Requirements:
If you are successful in a coach’s position, you will be required to complete mandatory training as outlined below by the OMHA in the 2024-2025 Requirements
