International Silver Stick Champions - U13 REP
U13 REP are International Silver Stick Champions!
International Silver Stick is one of North America's largest minor hockey tournaments, and brings together regional Champions and Finalists from across Canada and the United States.
In December 2024, U13 REP competed in the Ayr Regional Silver Stick and brought home the championship banner, securing them a spot to compete at the Pelham Finals - International Silver Stick.
U13 REP travelled to Pelham January 9 - 12, and competed against teams from Denver Colorado, Anaheim California, Brooklyn New York, Bowling Green Ohio, Ontario, and more. The Comets came through Round Robin with 29 goals for, 3 goals against, and two shutouts for goaltender Cam McLellan. The Comets finished round robin in the first seed position.
In the semi-final game, the Comets faced the Bowling Green Ice Cats from Ohio. In a tough physical game, the Comets came out on top with a 5-3 score, sending them to the Championship.
In the Championship game against Araphaoe Warrirors, the first period ended with no goals from either team. Early into the second period, the Warriors got on the board, with the first goal of the game. The Comets fought back, with defenseman Jackson Jubenville tying the game with a top corner goal with 1 minute left in the second period. The second period ended 1-1 for Warriors and Comets.
One minute and twenty seconds into the third period, defenseman Jackson Jubenville scored again, bringing the Comets to the lead with a 2-1 score. With less than 2 minutes left in the third period, the Warriors pulled their goalie. With the extra attacker, they swarmed the net, and goaltender Cam McLellan for the Comets made a highlight reel save, which once again fuelled the Comets momentum.
The Comets won the next draw, and sent the puck up to winger Johnny Campbell, who fired it down the ice and scored an empty net goal, giving the Comets the lead of 3-1 to finish out the game.
The U13 REP West Lorne Comets are 1 of 3 teams from West Lorne in International Silver Stick history to win this North American title. It was won in 1995/1996 in St. Clair Shores, MI by West Lorne Comets Novice C (U9 REP), and in 1992/1993 in Forest Ontario by the West Lorne Comets Atom C (U11).
As a result of becoming International Silver Stick Champions, the West Lorne Comets U13 REP name will be added to the International Silver Stick plaque in the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the permanent exhibit. The team was presented with the white Silver Stick International Champion Banner which will be hung proudly from the rafters of the Bo Horvat Community Centre. The team also received the pretsigous Silver Stick trophy, which will be displaying in the trophy case in the arena.
The players also received individual medals and elite Silver Stick pins. The players also got a chance to hold the elite "silver hockey stick" which is only presented to winners.
